My name is Kay Rees-Davies and after teaching English and Drama, and later Music, I became a freelance artist, specialising in botanical illustration and flower portraiture. I am married to John and have two grown up children and three grandchildren. l live on the North Wales coast.
I am also an experienced teacher and hold classes and workshops throughout the country together with some residential courses.
Altogether I have gained eight medals from the Royal Horticultural Society, four of them Gold Medals. Working for these has been an inspiration to explore the painting of different plants. I have been very fortunate to meet the people who grow them and who have been more than generous in imparting their knowledge to me.
I have work in several collections, the most prestigious being the Highgrove Florilegium. This is a collection of paintings of plants growing at Highgrove, the residence of HRH the Prince of Wales. There are five of my paintings in the Lindley Library of the Royal Horticultural Society, and two more are in the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, USA. The Shirley Sherwood Collection has a picture of Ivy, and there are several paintings in the archive of the Chelsea Physic Garden, London. I am proud to be a Fellow of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society.
I also have a class on a regular basis in Rhos-on-Sea (North Wales); I am a tutor at Ness Botanic Gardens (on the Wirral), and I hold classes at the Wilmslow Guild. I also teach at residential
courses for the Field Studies Council at Shrewsbury and
Betws-y-Coed and at Alston Hall, Preston.
